Do trains run on Christmas Day? UK rail over Christmas 2026
Do trains run on Christmas Day? Not on National Rail. What to expect on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year 2026, and how to check your route.
No. National Rail runs no passenger trains on Christmas Day. Services stop for the day across England, Scotland and Wales, and the London Underground closes too. Christmas Eve has trains, though many routes finish earlier in the evening than usual. Boxing Day has only a very limited service, and most operators run no trains at all. Between Christmas and New Year, engineering works close or change some lines, so check your exact journey before you set off.
That's the short version. If you're planning a trip home or back again, the detail below should save you a cold wait on a quiet platform.
Are there any trains on Christmas Day?
For practical purposes, no. Christmas Day is the one day of the year when the national network is almost entirely shut to passengers. Demand is low and most railway staff get the day off (engineers are the exception, since an empty railway is a good time for track work).
So if you're travelling to family, aim for Christmas Eve or earlier. And if you're coming back, Boxing Day is a gamble on many routes, which pushes most people to the 27th or later.

Christmas and New Year 2026 at a glance
Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday. Boxing Day is a Saturday, so the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. Here's how the fortnight usually looks:
| Day | Date | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Christmas Eve | Thursday 24 December | Trains run, but many routes finish earlier in the evening |
| Christmas Day | Friday 25 December | No National Rail trains anywhere in Britain |
| Boxing Day | Saturday 26 December | Most operators run no trains; a few run a limited service |
| Weekend and bank holiday | 27 and 28 December | Trains back on most routes, with engineering works in places |
| Between the holidays | 29 and 30 December | Mostly normal timetables, but check for works |
| New Year's Eve | Thursday 31 December | Trains run, though some routes finish earlier than normal |
| New Year's Day | Friday 1 January 2027 | Often a reduced service |
Treat the right-hand column as a guide, since every operator sets its own Christmas timetable. In Scotland the 2 January bank holiday moves to Monday 4 January in 2027, because 2 January is a Saturday, so ScotRail's timetable around then is worth checking.
What happens on Boxing Day?
Boxing Day is the day that catches people out. You might expect a Sunday service. Most operators run nothing at all, and where trains do run there are fewer of them, sometimes starting late in the morning and stopping early in the evening.
If you need to travel on the 26th, look up your exact route a few days ahead. If it's not running, coaches or a lift might be the only options, or waiting a day.
Why is there so much engineering work over Christmas?
Because it's the quietest stretch of the railway's year. Big jobs, like renewing track or signalling, sometimes need a line closed for several days in a row, and Christmas to New Year is the least disruptive time to do that.
That means some routes have rail replacement buses between Christmas and New Year, and sometimes a section of a big station closes too. The works are planned months ahead, so they show up in journey planners once confirmed. It's the main reason to check your trip even on days with a normal timetable. For the everyday reasons trains run late or get cancelled, see our guide on why trains are delayed or cancelled.
How do I check if my train is running over Christmas?
A few habits help:
- Use the National Rail Enquiries journey planner for your actual date. It includes planned engineering works and Christmas timetables once they're published.
- Check the operator's own website as well, especially for Christmas Eve last trains.
- Look again the day before. Timetables can change late, particularly if the weather turns.
- On the day, watch the live departures from your station. Platforms, delays and cancellations show up there first.
If you're not sure what all the codes and status words mean, our guide on how to read a train departure board walks through each line.
What does a departure board show on Christmas Day?
Not much, and that's correct. A live board only shows trains that are actually due.
TrainTicker, our home departure board, shows the next trains from any National Rail station, live from Darwin, National Rail's train information system. On Christmas Day, with nothing due, it shows your station, No departures and the clock with seconds ticking over. When services start again on the 26th or 27th, they appear on the board on their own, with platforms and any delays. It's a nice way to see at a glance whether your local line has woken up, without opening an app.
You can try it now with the free live demo: pick any station and see what's running.
Christmas trains that do run: Santa specials
While the national network winds down, many of Britain's heritage railways run Santa trains for families in the weeks before Christmas. They usually run on weekends in December and on some days before Christmas, and the popular dates often sell out early. Our guide to Santa specials on heritage railways explains how they work and how to book.

Frequently asked questions
Are there any trains on Christmas Day in the UK?+
No. National Rail passenger services across Britain stop for Christmas Day, and the London Underground closes as well. Plan to travel on Christmas Eve or later in the week instead.
Do trains run on Boxing Day?+
Only a very limited one. Most operators run no trains at all, and where trains do run, there are fewer of them and they may start late and finish early. Check National Rail Enquiries for your exact journey.
What time do the last trains run on Christmas Eve?+
It varies by route and operator, but many services finish earlier in the evening than on a normal weekday. Look up your specific last train a few days ahead, because the Christmas Eve timetable is often different from the usual one.
Why are there engineering works over Christmas?+
Fewer people travel between Christmas and New Year, so Network Rail uses the quiet days for big jobs that need lines closed for longer. Some routes have rail replacement buses or are closed for several days. Journey planners show planned works once they are confirmed.
What does a home departure board show on Christmas Day?+
With no trains due, TrainTicker shows the station name, No departures and the clock. As soon as trains appear in National Rail's data again, they come back on the board on their own.
